Trinity Sunday A
May 2008
It has always been a bother to me as to why, 1) God bothered to create at all. 2) Why He bothered to create human beings and 3) why God bothered to create me.
OK. I had heard all the standard reasons such as the Goodness of God, the Love of God etc. but they did not even begin to satisfy. God can be very good and very loving without it requiring Him to create.
In our seminary training we were told that the Holy Trinity was a mystery and best left alone. It was only when I began to take the doctrine of the Holy Trinity seriously that I began to appreciate its importance and that it could shed some light on the question as to why God created.
We human beings are created in God’s image and likeness. This is never more evident than when we love each other. The very foundation of love is sharing. This is demonstrated in married life. The more a couple love one another the more they share what they have with each other. The culmination of this sharing is the bringing into existence of another person - their child, who shares in everything the parents have.
This is the best example we can see of life in the Holy Trinity.
The best definition we can give of God is to say that God is Love.
This love and therefore this sharing is so complete that the three different persons of the Holy Trinity do not just share the one Godhead between them (a third each so that the three together make up one God), but each is totally and fully God in His own right yet the three together are one God.
So you can say that by His very nature God - The Holy Trinity - is totally loving and thus totally sharing.
Creation is simply sharing what God has with other things.
So God’s very nature compels Him, and will always compel him, to share what is His with other things. This is why things exist. This is why I exist. This is why I am made in God’s image and likeness and this is why I inherit God’s Kingdom in Eternal Life.
God, of His very nature, will never revoke His gifts. God cannot un-create what He has created. God cannot reject anyone or anything He has created.
We human beings can reject God but God cannot reject a human being.
