April 2010

‘So when he had washed their feet he said to them, “Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.’

It was only after this that Jesus went on to give us the Eucharist (the Mass) and the ordained priesthood. Obviously the connection between Eucharist, priesthood and service must be very strong.

And again:

‘A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.’

Obviously at the very core of Jesus message is service to one another.

What a lovely and peaceful place God’s world would be if we all tried to be of service to each other.
