Epiphany 2011

January 2011

All Homilies

‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race.’

Everything that happened from the beginning. The whole of creation. The universe. The evolution of life. Eventually the evolution of intelligent life. Everything in existence is an Epiphany.

Epiphany is a manifestation of, a revelation, an insight into, the nature, essence or meaning of something.

Creation is an epiphany of the existence of a Supreme Being. The intricate laws and workings of creation is an epiphany of the power and knowledge of the Supreme Being. Life, especially intelligent life is an epiphany of the nature of God. Human beings with their ability to love to forgive to sympathise to care for each other and for the rest of creation is an epiphany of the essence of the Supreme Being; of God.

The Old Testament is an epiphany. The New Testament is an epiphany, the Koran is an epiphany. The writings of Hinduism and of Buddha etc. etc. are an epiphany.

The birth of Christ at Christmas is an epiphany. The experience of the shepherds and of the magi is an epiphany.

If I have eyes to see and ears to hear the world that surrounds me, everyone I meet, is an epiphany of God.

Am I an epiphany of God to my family, to those I meet on a daily basis, and to those with whom I have any contact?
