Third Sunday of Lent B
March 2009
‘I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me.’
I profess to love my wife but spend most of my spare time in a pub talking to another woman.
I profess to love my husband but spends most of my time in a pub talking to another man.
I profess to be a Child of God and to love my Father but spend most of my spare time with colleagues or friends discussing sport, finance, politics, work etc.
Each scenario involves deliberate or inadvertent self deception.
I am trying to fool the other person or trying to fool myself.
Lent is the time when I take a good look at my life; all aspects of my life; and try to get my priorities right.
Lent is a time to stop trying to deceive myself or others.
Lent is a time for being honest with myself and with my God.
The three scenarios I have outlined may sound a bit exaggerated, but in reality, how much of my spare time do I spend in the presence of my God?
