Second Sunday of Lent B - Trust in God

March 2009

‘If God is for us, who is against us?’

The story of Abraham being asked by God to sacrifice his son is of course fictional. God could not ask such a thing.

The story is meant to show us how Abraham trusted His God. The message is that Abraham had total confidence in God, and no matter how bad things seemed to be his confidence in God never wavered.

The real sign of someone who really knows God is complete trust in God despite doubts, disaster and despair.

As we read in the first lines of today’s responsorial psalm; ‘I believed, even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted.”’

Many of you have, at one time or another, shunted God into some siding in your life.

You did so from boredom, anger with God for the hand that life dealt you, preoccupation with relationships, drugs, money and advancement.

This seems to be a pretty normal phase which many young people go through.

Many, as they achieve a balance in their lives, make God more mainstream.

Some never achieve that balance.

I might shunt God into a siding but God never shunts me into a siding.

The trials and tribulations, the sorrows and joys, the successes and failures and above all the responsibilities and duties which life brings, makes me aware of God’s constant presence in my life, struggling to do the best He can for me, His beloved child, as I struggle to do the best I can for those I love.

Like a parent waiting for the slightest indication that a wayward child may return, so too with God.

Then you wont see Him for the dust as He races to welcome you.
