‘What do you want?’

‘Rabbi where are you staying?’

‘Come and you will see.’

‘So they went and stayed with him that day.’

I find that you never begin to really know a person or a family until you have visited them in their home and stayed with them for a while.

When you visit a home and sit down and share a cup of tea or coffee you get an insight into the person or family which you will not get otherwise. One hears of hopes and dreams, of problems and fears, of joys and festive occasions. One sees the person or family as real people and glimpse complex interpersonal relationships.

These two disciples of John the Baptist heard him say ‘look the Lamb of God!’

They followed him wondering who he was and not too sure how to approach him or if they should speak to him and introduce themselves.

Jesus took the initiative and spoke to them.

He did not sit down there and then with them and tell them who he was and explain his mission to them.

He invited them to his house and they stayed the rest of that day with him. He would of course have given them some refreshment and something to eat with it.

They spent the rest of the time chatting together.

It was this visit to his home, how he acted, how he treated them, how he talked to them, that convinced at least one of them - Andrew - to go to his brother Peter and tell him ‘we have found the Messiah.’

Wouldn’t it be great if people would say after visiting my home, ‘we have found a Christian.’
