First Sunday of Lent B - Women's World Day of Prayer
March 2009
Ninety nine percent of men firmly believe, although they don’t admit this, that the greatest thing God created was woman ……. after man.
Woman bring joy, stability, completeness and the unexpected into man’s life. On the other hand most men spend their lives keeping their woman happy and doing what she tells them to do.
Even with the best will in the world a man can still find himself playing offside.
For example after God created Eve, Adam was delighted and the two got on like a house on fire. Then one day Eve said to Adam. ‘This old fig leaf that God gave me is getting a bit old and tatty, could you ever get me another one?’ Adam, of course, was delighted to do so and arrived back shortly with not one but two fig leaves.
Some time later she had the same request and again Adam was happy to oblige. Gradually she began asking for different shapes and colours of fig leaf. Adam always obliged.
Gradually Adam had to travel further and further a field to collect the desired shape and hue of leaf. This necessitated longer and longer periods when he was away from home.
Then one day, arriving back from a long trek to find the desired leaves, Adam found himself confronted by a far from happy Eve. ‘Why are you away from home so much these days?’ She asked sharply, you’re running around with another woman.’
‘You’re being unreasonable,’ Adam responded. ‘You’re the only woman on earth.’
The quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by someone poking him in the chest.
It was Eve. ‘What do you think you’re doing?‘ Adam demanded.
‘Counting your ribs,’ said Eve.
Now to show your wife that you are not one of the 99%, general run of men but belong to that special 1% group who know that women are their equal and even superior, you have the opportunity of accompanying her to the ‘women’s world day of prayer’ here at St. Patrick’s, this Friday at 7.30pm.
Surely you wouldn’t miss this golden opportunity of proving your pedigree once and for all.
