What is Christianity?
Christians are people who believe that Jesus Christ, who lived in the Holy Land 2,000 years ago, is the Son of God, and who follow his teachings and those of the Christian churches that grew up after his death.
Christians believe that:
- God sent his Son to earth to save humanity from the consequences of its sins (i.e. its disobedience to God)
- Jesus was fully human, and experienced this world in the same way as other human beings of his time
- Jesus was tortured and gave his life on the Cross (At the Crucifixion)
- Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after his Crucifixion (the Resurrection)
Christians believe that there is only one God, but that this one God consists of 3 "persons":
- God the Father
- God the Son
- The Holy Spirit
Jesus said:
You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. . . . You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law., and the Prophets too.
(Matt. 22:37,39)
Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.
(C.S. Lewis)
A quick trawl of the Internet will quickly give a good idea of the ‘basics’ of Christian belief, but the real purpose of this page is to provide space for a more personal reflection of what Christianity1 means to us, the parishioners of St. Patricks’s in Corsham.
We hope that this page will stimulate personal reflection and continually evolve as more and more people contribute their own thoughts to it. To add your voice to the discussion ...
